Surviving With IndustrialCraft 2 :: Ep.10 - Simple Nuclear Reactor Setup

838 ratings | 86794 views
Today I set up a simple IC2 nuclear reactor. The reactor uses single uranium fuel rods combined with heat vents and heat exchangers to generate power without the threat of explosion. Nuclear Reactor Wiki: http://wiki.industrial-craft.net/index.php?title=Nuclear_Reactor =================================== This series is based around the mod IndustrialCraft 2 (IC2), which is a great standalone mod that brings many different technological advances to the game, such as nuclear power and a countless number of intricate multiblock machines. The series is directly inspired by Chilm's "Surviving With ..." series that he has recently restarted. So, so,so... so so. So so so so so so. So so so so so so so? SO SO SO!
Horst Kretschmer (4 months ago)
You should connect the redstone to the Cesu to only turn on the reactor when its empty

so they removed the isotopes and you can connect L4 power with simple copper cables? and wow they actually made it default off instead of on lol the most special is i see no coolent cell or water around your setup, nor thermal sensor to shut it off at a certain point automatically... they changed this mod so much they should have called it IC3...

nuclear reactor! i like that
RagePlaysGames (11 months ago)
Definitely the best part of IC2!

I see you working a lot with Thermal Expansion  do you also know how to install it on a cauldronn server? so i can use it with my friends to? because if i startup with cofh core thermal doundation and Thermal Expansion  it sais that i also need forge? Is there also a forge coremod then?
Brian Buskey (1 year ago)
You said "so" 92 times in this video.

lmao
Rudy Roberts (1 year ago)
Well I tuned the power on to my reactor and it just instantly exploded. Wow. Maybe I'm better at big reactors lol
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Unfortunately, if it exploded right away, I assume it was a cable issue of some sort. When these reactors overheat it builds up and isn't instant. In this mod version, the cable didnt matter, but in never versions it requires higher tier cable for more power transportation.
will a quad mox work?
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
You have to stick with the exact setup given here has a quad mox would have different values in terms of heat generated. It may be able to function on and off, but I doubt it would line up exactly and be able to run 24/7.

The Happy Murloc (1 year ago)
these reactors are dangerous they can blow up obsidian i have tested it its crazy
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Oh yea, you need multiple layers of obsidian or reinforced stone if you want to be safe from the explosion. That is why I always urge people to pay close attention during the video (some people claim my setup doesnt work to later find out on small error they made).
EariosRandomness (1 year ago)
For safety reasons (because these reactors can explode violently), I would put my reactor near bedrock level beneath my base, and in a room lined with obsidian to minimize damage in the case of a meltdown. I know this series is over now, but this suggestion is more for anyone watching after it's over. Also, it's a neutron pulse you're thinking of. The real-life science behind it is the reactor generates power from the heat generated by the splitting of atoms. This splitting also causes random neutrons to fly off, and likely hit another atom of uranium. This splits the hit atom, and perpetuates the cycle.

I tested the reactor explosion in a 3 blocks thick obsidian box under the ocean and I filled the reactor all QUAD fuel rod it worked pretty good some of the wall was all blown out but the edge the box remained unharmed
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
That is great news! I know lots of people are afraid of IC2 reactors because of the threat of explosion, but if they just do that and/or use wireless power transfer there is nothing to worry about.
b34113411 (1 year ago)
do water blocks absorb the nuclear reactor explosion damage? also which ic2 version should I look up on wiki in mc 1.7.10?Im a bit confused on the wiki by all the update :/ thx

Glad to have been helpful! Best of luck with your IC2 reactor endeavors!
Tom Kapybara (1 year ago)
Nice! Normal tutorial how to set up this reactor... I watched tutorials with 300 more machines, robots and more stupid thinks :D Thank You! (But I must edit this "Nuclear Set Up")
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Hah, glad I could help! As for the title, I prefer setup over set up because setup is the actual way it has been put together, whereas set up is the actual creation of it. I mainly made the video to show the in reactor uranium placement, not overall reactor creation :)
Brain Maggot (1 year ago)
the answer is 12.00390625 HU i'm pretty shore. 8 + 0.25 x 0.25 x 0.25 x 0.25 + 4. because a tick is 0.05 seconds and a fuel rod makes 5 EU per tick so 5 x 0.0. and the 8 and 4 are there because he four rods.
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Hmmm, interesting! I never actually went and did any of the math out, but thank you :)
J.R. May (1 year ago)
I set up this reactor and now machines are blowing up. Any thoughts?
Haplo Teromaximus (7 months ago)
I was having this problem as well. I figured it might need a transformer. So, I configured my reactor so it produced 120 EU/t, and connected a LV Transformer (128/t to 32/t) between the reactor and my machines. But, with the transformer connected, nothing was getting power ... Until I figured out the side with 5 dots was supposed to connected to the cable that came from the reactor.
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
If you are using a different version, too much power to certain machine can cause them to explode (same with wires). Because of this you need to add transformers to lower the power going through to the machines.

thx this is so helpful

that was just me being dumb good thing i had a back up i could afford advanced heat vents i was being dumb but i did back up my world so thank god.... XD
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Hmmm, well ive had confirmation that it is safe and it never caused any problems for me so sadly something must have been off with your setup :(
Holden B (1 year ago)
the first 10 min i had this i went afk with the reactor on and it blew my base up XD
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
No problem! Always happy to hear I was helpful.

I Find this very helpful! Thank you! However, I do wish I had a count clicker while watching this video to tally up the total times you said the word "so". Regardless, I'll still give a thumbs up.
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Hah im happy to hear it improved!
Franklin Chappell (1 year ago)
DrRageHard no worries man. I enjoyed watching the rest of the series :D A lot of helpful info and not so many "so" in the other videos lol

How do u get so much uranium?! I know u macerate it but how do u get so much?
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Hmmm, aside from just mining and occasionally using UU matter for the sake of the episode I didn't do much. Being able to process used cells and get some back is an awesome way to keep the cycle going.
Termidor00 (1 year ago)
Literally just did the same thing thanks!
RagePlaysGames (1 year ago)
Awesome! You're welcome :)
CSSstravag (1 year ago)
At a guess, I would say the efficiency between rods is due to neutron pulses. Neurons are biologic, neutrons are involved in the weak nuclear process (fission). (EDIT After the fact: Doc RageHard did correct himself a minute later.) Love the series, I have been dreading having to grind through IC2 on FTB Infinity Evolved Skyblock, this is a big help since I do most of my work with Thermal Dynamics and EnderIO from minute to minute!

Hi, like your "Surviving With..."-Series very much. Thanks for it. A RotaryCraft-Season would also be nice.
RagePlaysGames (2 years ago)
+A.Stranger Glad you like the series :) and possibly! Gotta wait and see once the current series ends.

You are my favorite youuber
Dr AWESOMENESS (2 years ago)
No prob man. I really think you're cool.
RagePlaysGames (2 years ago)
+Dr AWESOMENESS Thanks! It's comments like this that motivate me :) I really appreciate the support
Triaxx2 (2 years ago)
One thing I always used to do, and probably would now, is fill any empty spaces with reactor plating. That way if something does go wrong and heat vents burn out, the reactor should be able to absorb the excess heat. Also, if you have all 6 chambers, you can still access the UI from any block, including with say sorting machines. I can't recall if having a comparator on the reactor reads heat, but that might be useful to plug into an AND gate set up so it can't get too hot. (With the other input being power required.
RagePlaysGames (2 years ago)
+Triaxx2 Noticed half way through the video that you could click any block to get access :P didnt wanna mention it tho lmao
how many episodes are you planning to do?
RagePlaysGames (2 years ago)
+Alexander QUINTERO Garcia I do plan on stopping when I get through everything, but it should be roughly 30-40 episodes (little longer than the Immersive Engineering series)
Egon Henriksen (2 years ago)
He'll probably stop when he has done basically everything this mod can offer.
Curtis Cochran (2 years ago)
I thank you should do buildcraft and supporting mods like logistics pipes next
Curtis Cochran (2 years ago)
+DrRageHard ohh i love buildcraft and logistics pipes.. but you could do a surviving with a mod pack and like get on tekket legends it has alot of the mods people have been sugjesting you do
RagePlaysGames (2 years ago)
+Curtis Cochran Definitely interested in buildcraft :) looks like tons of fun, mainly avoiding it because Chilm has already done a Surviving With series with it

Finally switched over to Sony Vegas 13 from Windows Movie Maker :) hopefully the quality is still good!

for some reason the radiation is like twenty square chunks. on the website it said 3x3x3 block radius and the most it got up to was 7x7x7 and I moved like 100 blocks away. If I could get some help that would be great!
HJ Neel (1 year ago)
I accidentally put too much uranium in it and I am using the warp drive mod so it blew up part of my ship but lucking I could repair it
BOOMbarash5000 (2 years ago)
Played for about 2 weeks with nuclear reactors and finally realized that they dont worth the investment. Its much easier and cheaper to construct a huge wind generator. Plus u dont hafta get lost in mines searching for that green precious ore. And yes, biogas stuff is also cool, i built a biogas farm near my house, it generates 768 EU/t. If only nuclear reactors were generating like 4x the amount of energy, then yeah, that would be awesome and cost-efficient.
b34113411 (1 year ago)
nuclear power supreme
BrinkTheGamer (1 year ago)
You get more plutonium by running mox generators instead of uranium. And you get loads of rtg pellets by connecting a mass fab to those generators as you replicate them. Pretty self-efficient as I fed the output straight back into the input to the generators. But your idea is perfectly fine also J.D.
John David Dunson (1 year ago)
so that's my main reason for using nuclear reactors. and that's why i try to make the most inefficient reactor designs possible, to burn through the uranium as quickly as possible.
John David Dunson (1 year ago)
one of my ultimate goals in ic2 is a bunch of passive plutonium generators. they're only capable of 32 EU/t, so you'd need a ton of them, and you only get plutonium from a crap load of depleted uranium, BUT they're infinite sources that you never have to do anything to maintain. (they're called rtg pellets and thermoelectric generators.)
BrinkTheGamer (2 years ago)
+BOOMbarash5000 There are some very important modpacks like InfinityEvolved which require ic2 reactors because of the plutonium that come from the depleted uranium cells, so eventhough you're right that they don't ouput a whole lot of power, still they are necessary for progression in some packs. :D
Sebastian Polanco (2 years ago)
You should try equivalent exchange mod next :)
RagePlaysGames (2 years ago)
+Sebastian Polanco I'll look into it :) big thing is finding good stand alone mods so I would have to see if it has enough content
