How To Teach The Past Simple -- Did You Catch The Ball?

02:00
*** Illustrations provided by artist Shaun Ryan. Visit his YouTube channel for more incredible art and cartoon drawings that your students can learn to do: https://www.youtube.com/user/shaunryanart/ *** A fun and easy game to help your students practice the basic past simple structures using short and long answers. Instructions: The “DID YOU CATCH THE BALL?” game. You will need: A teacher 2 or more students An object that can be thrown such as a ball. You can play the game once your students understand the basic concept of irregular past tense verbs (eat, ate; drink, drank; run, ran). Tell them that it’s time to learn another irregular verb in the past simple: the verb to catch. Demonstrate the concept of catching something and/or translate it. Write catch, caught at the top of the board. Underneath it write the interrogative form, “Did you catch the ball?” Also the affirmatives, “Yes, I did. I caught the ball.” And the negatives, “No, I didn’t. I didn’t catch the ball.” Now, throw the ball to a student. Ask him, “Did you catch the ball?” If he did, have him answer using both affirmative forms: “Yes, I did. I caught the ball.” Next, throw the ball to another student. Ask her “Did you catch the ball?” If she didn’t catch the ball, have her answer in the negative: “No, I didn’t. I didn’t catch the ball.” Continue the game until all your students have had a turn.

The active voice is used to give importance to the subject or the doer of the action and the passive voice gives importance to the object. Website : http://www.letstalkpodcast.com Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/letstalkpodcast There are basic steps you follow to convert the sentences from active to passive. 1. Interchange the subject and object 2. Take the main verb in its past participle form. 3. Do not change the tense of the original sentence, so add an auxiliary verb. 4. Ensure the doer of the action does not change once the sentence is in the passive voice. Example 01: The man cut down the tree. (active) The tree was cut down by the man. (passive) Example 02: The boys were helping the wounded man. (active) The wounded man was being helped by the boys. (passive) Example 03: He had given me a bouquet. (active) I had been given a bouquet by him. (passive) In the above example, ‘me’ is the object as action of giving a bouquet had been done on ‘me’. People often get confused with ‘bouquet’ as the object. To clear the confusion while identifying the object, always ask the question-on whom is the action done. Example 04: Who broke the jar? (active) By whom was the jar broken? (passive) Example 05: Why were you doing the work? (active) Why was the work being done by you? (passive) Example 06: Why had you done the work? (active) Why had the work been done by you? (passive) There is no ‘past perfect continuous’ tense for the passive voice.

Our active past and our passive present

01:26
In Stone Age societies, people led physically active lives. In contemporary nomadic societies they still do. Constant walking, hunting and picking things up off the ground and down from the trees were prerequisites for finding food. Even after people began to settle in agricultural societies with permanent abodes, the physical labour necessary to produce food required varied use of limbs and muscles. Recently, across large parts of the globe, lifestyles have changed radically. We have suddenly become more passive, and there is less variety in the kinds of physical tasks we expect our bodies to perform. We do less physical labour, and our bodily activities are fewer. For most of us, hard physical toil is no longer essential to our survival. Animation: Jan Konings, Script: Peter Opsvik

Grammar: Learn to use REPORTED SPEECH in English

08:14
http://www.engvid.com/ Reported speech and indirect speech mean the same thing: They allow you to express what someone has said. This sentence, "He said he was studying English", is an example of reported speech. But how do you conjugate the verbs? Is it "he said he was studying" or "he said he studied"? Both are correct depending on the situation. Learn how to say it correctly every time with Ronnie's quick and easy chart. Your friends said they watched this lesson. So what are you waiting for? http://www.engvid.com/reported-speech-he-said-she-said/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. My name's Ronnie. I'm going to teach you some very, very simple reported speech things. If you don't know what reported speech is, welcome to the confusing word... World of confusing reported speech and words. Reported speech, maybe when you study it in your class, the teacher or whoever, will call it indirect speech. It's the same. So, indirect speech or reported speech is exactly the same. Yay. Why or how do we use reported speech? Good question. We use this to report or to write down what somebody has said. If somebody has told you something, this is going to be a quote. A "quote" means you copy the person's words exactly. You have to be really careful not to change their words. Reported speech or indirect speech is usually only used for writing. So, we don't really have to worry about all of these crazy rules when we speak. Whew, thank god. So, we're just going to go through the past, the present, and the future. We're going to change quoted speech into reported speech. This little chart will help you. If you want to copy down this chart, take a picture of the chart, I guarantee it will make your reported speech grammar class or grammar learning amazing. Check it out. So, in the present tense, we have two tenses, we have present simple or simple present and we have present continuous. As an example: "She eats lunch." is present simple. This is something she does every day. So if I wanted to report or write down this, write this down, I would use reported speech. So: "She eats lunch." My present simple, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my verb "eats", and change it to past simple. So, present simple verb we're going to change to past simple. I would say: "She said she ate lunch." In this sentence, "eat" is present simple; in the reported speech, "ate" is my past simple. So, present simple changes to past simple in reported speech. If I have a present continuous example, this means something the person is doing now... For example: "He is painting." So he's an artist, he's got a paint brush and some paint, and he's painting. We have to change this to past continuous. So, if we have "is painting", all we have to do to make this past continuous is change it to "was painting". Present continuous to past continuous, the only thing that changes is our "to be" verb changes from present to past. "He said he was painting." Moving right along. Or moving back, back to the future. We have present perfect. An example of a present perfect sentence: "He", sorry. "They had a shower." It's about time; they smell a lot. So, if we wanted to report this or write this down, we would say... Oh, he said... He... Sorry: "They have had". This is strange, "have had". Check this out. Present perfect is going to change to past perfect. So: "They have had", if we change it to past perfect, we have to change it to "had had". Ronnie, "had had"? Is that true? Yes. This is right. So, present perfect, "have had", changes to "had" plus PP: "had had". So: "They said they had had a shower." And it's about time, because they're pretty smelly. The next one: past simple. For example: "He took my photo." In this sentence, your verb is "took". This is a past. So, past simple, present perfect, both of these we have to change to, again, past perfect. So we're going to change this to: "They said he had taken my photo." And the last one, past perfect, don't change it. It's cool. It's already done. Past perfect you have to change to past perfect, so you don't have to change the grammar in this sentence. -"They had had a dog." -"They said they had had"-that's crazy again, but it's true-"a dog." So, if you have a past sentence, present perfect, simple past, or past perfect, all of these are going to be changed to past perfect. That's easier. "Had" plus the past participle. You okay? Moving on to the future. We have two future tenses in English. Future simple or simple future, which is going to be "will", and we have future "going to". Simple future: "She will go." Future "going to": "They are going to play football with their new shoes." Do you play football? Future simple: "She will go", all we're going to do is change the verb or the modal "will" to "would". So it's going to change to: "She would go". That's cool. "Will" changes to "would". That's easy.

Past Simple and Past Continuous - English grammar tutorial video lesson

04:04
Past simple and past continuous grammar lesson. In this lesson I am going to show how to use and form both the past simple & the past continuous and how to keep them apart. Take a look at these sentences: I watched the telly last night. I was watching the telly last night. The first sentences contains a past simple, the second sentence is in the past continuous. In this lesson I'm going to show you how to form a past simple and how to form a past continuous and when to use past simple andwhen to use a past continuous and more important the difference between the two. First we are going to take a look at how to form these past tenses. As you might know in the English language we have regular and irregular verbs. And this this is important to remember when forming a past simple. To make a past simple for the regular verbs, we use the base form of the verb and add 'ed.'' For example: He worked late last night www.englishgrammarspot.com The irregular verbs have their own and unique past tense so you need to study those carefully. I bought a new t-shirt yesterday. The infinitive form of the verb bought is to buy. With the past continuous we do not need to worry about regular and irregular verbs. Because all verbs that take a past continous whether they're regular or irregular, are formed by using was or were, the past tenses of the verb 'to be', and the base form of the verb and '-ing.' For example: He was working last night I was buying a t-shirt, when I saw her yesterday. Now let's have a look at how to use a past simple and how to use a past continuous and how to keep them apart. we use a past simple for actvities that were finished in the past, we usually use a time frame: He worked late last night. Here last night is what we consider timeframe. I bought a new T-shirt yesterday Here yesterday is a timeframe. A past continuous is used for activities started and finished in the past, but we want emphasized duration: so we want to show the other person the other listener or reader that the action lasted for quite some time. For example: He was working all night so we want emphasize that it lasted the entire night. we also use past continuous form for an ongoing action in the past interrupted by a sudden event. For example: I was buying a t-shirt when I ran into her so I was doing something and then suddenly a friend came up to me that's when I ran into her. Please note that for the interruption we use a past simple so we often find a past continuous and a past simple in the same sentence with the past continuous showing us that it was a continuing activity and the past simple showing the interruption of that activity.

Passive voice lesson - English grammar tutorial video lesson

10:11
Passive voice grammar tutorial. In this lesson I'm going to show you when to use passive and how to form a passive. I'm going to show you how to form a passive for every tense in the English language. Take a look at the following sentences: I have closed the door. The door has been closed by me. The first sentence is an active sentence, the second sentence is a passive sentence. Now usually we turn active sentences into passive sentences so what we do is, the object of the active sentence becomes that subject of the passive sentence and the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence, so I has become me and the door has become the subject of the passive sentence. Now when do we use a passive? I'm going to tell you some technicalities be not alarmed the passive is not hard but there are some things that you need to know. We use a passive when the subject of a verb so in the example before, is more important than the person or thing carrying it out the object. So in the example before the door was more important than me closing it. The object of the passive form is usually left out because is not important or as in my example preceded by the way it 'by' When we want to changean active sentence into a passive as I already said, the object if the active sentence becomes that subject of the passive sentence. The passive always need to contain a form of the auxiliary verb to be and the past participle. Remember the English language has regular and irregular verbs. So for the regular verbs a past aprticiple is made by adding 'ed' to the base from of the verb or we use its own unique form, so for instance take - took - taken the past participle will be taken know the auxiliary verb takes the tense if the verb in the active sentence, so when we change an active sentence into passive we need to put verb to be in the tense of the active sentence. The main verb in the active sentence is turned into past participle. Now I don't hope that your head is spinning because it's really quite easy I'll show you. So we are going to turn an active present simple into a passive present simple. She buys tomatoes Now remember we're going to swap she and tomatoes around so we're going to start with tomatoes. A passive is made by the verb to be and the past participle so we need to pick the correct form of the verb to be for tomatoes which is 'are' here so Tomatoes are bought by her. Remember: to buy - bought - bought. Another example the present continuous. An active present continuous is They are taking down the police station. For the passive form we need to maintain that continuous form that's quite hard so we need either to use to use: am, are or is and then the continuous form being and the past participle. Don't forget to put being into a continuous passive when your active sentence was present continuous you have to maintain that you can't swap tenses. The police station is being taken down. So please note that we've put the police station into the slots of the subject in the passive sentence as it is important by whom the police station is being takendown. So again don't forget to put in being. Let's have a look at present perfect an active present perfect is: I havve painted the door so we are going to change it into a present perfect passive and remember the door has to become the subject. So a passive is made by have or has and then a form of to be and since it is perfect here we need to use the perfect form of the verb to be so here it is been and the past participle of the verb to paint. The door has been painted. So pay attention, in the active form it was I have but since in the passive form the door has become third person singular you need to use has. Now the past tenses, first the past simple active: They sold the car yesterday. Remember just as in the present simple we need to use a form of 'to be' so was or were and the possible participle. The car was sold yesterday. Past continuous active They were cleaning the house. So to make it into a passive we will make the house the subject of the passive form. Remeber don't forget to put in being Passive: was or were + being and the past participle. The house was being cleaned it was done by them, but that's not important the past perfect, the active past perfect they had given him a job and the passive we use had + been just as in the present perfect and past participle to give gave given. He had been given a job. www.englishgrammarspot.com

Grammar: Active and Passive Gerunds

07:17
http://www.engvid.com/ Did you know that you can use gerunds in active AND passive forms? Did you know you can actually use gerunds in past forms as well as present and future? This grammar lesson is for advanced students, so if you're having a hard time understanding the constructions, get yourself prepared by checking out my lesson on the uses of gerunds (http://www.engvid.com/6-ways-to-use-gerunds/), and my lesson on common verbs followed by gerunds (http://www.engvid.com/10-verbs-followed-by-infinitives/). Once you feel confident, come back here and challenge yourself even more! http://www.engvid.com/grammar-active-passive-gerunds/ TRANSCRIPT Hey, guys. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on active and passive gerunds. Those of you who don't know, a gerund is a verb + "ing". And if you'd like to check out the various uses of gerunds and where a gerund can go in a sentence, you can check out my previous lesson on the various uses of gerunds. That lesson is very essential to understanding this one, so please check it out if you haven't already. In this lesson, we're going to look at how to use a gerund in a passive form and in an active form. Now, very simply, let's begin with the easiest which is the active simple which is basically the simple gerund use, just verb "ing". Now, in this situation, this means you can put the gerund as a subject, as an object, as a subject complement, you can also put it as the object of a preposition, possessive. All that stuff is explained in the other lesson. So, for example, let's look at these sentences: "I like swimming." "Swimming" is the gerund, it's the object of the sentence. In the present, I enjoy swimming; I like swimming. "Smoking is bad for you." As we know and have discussed, a gerund can be the subject of a sentence, and here, "smoking" is the subject. "I regret not calling you." "Not calling", "calling" being the gerund in this situation. So this is your basic gerund use that most students at the advanced level are familiar with at some level or another. Okay, now let's look at the active past. Okay? Not the active simple, but the active past. If you specifically want to put a gerund into the past, you can do it by using: "having" + a past participle. In this structure, "having" is actually considered the gerund. So, let's look at this. "I'm proud of having completed university." Now, we call this active past because you are the one who completed university, you are the one who did the action. Right? And you are proud of... And again, we use a gerund here because of "of" which is a preposition. And I'm proud of having completed university, I'm proud now because I completed university in the past. Okay? And let's look at another example: "Having gone to college is one of the best things I've ever done." So here, "having gone" is considered the active gerund. Again, "having" is the gerund in this construction. Okay? So having gone to college is one of the best things I've ever done. So any time you have: "having done", "having done", "having done" something in the past, you're actually using a gerund. And in this situation, a passive - sorry - an active past gerund. Now, let's look over on this side and let's look at how we use passive gerunds. So this might be new for a lot of students here. Passive simple, basically all you're doing is you have "being" + p.p. Remember: "passive" means the person is receiving the action. Okay? So being done... Something is being done to the person. So, for example: "She hates being told what to do." "Being" is the gerund in this construction. She is receiving the action of someone telling her what to do. She hates being told what to do. And, again, if you're wondering, you know: "Why are you using 'being'? Why not 'to be'? Why are we using 'ing' and not 'to' plus the base verb in some of these?" Basically, it follows the constructions that I describe in the previous video about the uses of gerunds. So, again, another reminder to check that out before this. Okay, another example: "I'm tired of being insulted!" And, again, you have "of" which is a preposition, and after a preposition, you have to use a gerund. So I'm tired of being insulted by other people, or by him, by her, by someone. Okay? And, finally: "Being robbed is an awful experience." And here, we're using a gerund as a subject which is possible. Being robbed by someone - passive construction, you receive the action - is an awful experience. So here, you're speaking in general; here, you're speaking about the present; here, again, she hates being told what to do in general, in the present. Now, let's look at how we can refer to the past with this construction. So for the past...This is actually the least common form of all of these that we're... That are up here just because it's such a long construction that there are not many opportunities you get to actually use it.
