Deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, is one of the biggest electronic music acts in the US and his anti-marketing approach has been a huge success. He has found a way to really connect with the growing EDM audience. Joel is not competing directly with these traditional pop acts but he has had two top ten albums on the US Billboard charts, as well as regularly topping the dance charts. But it is his approach to self-promotion and the way he interacts with his audience that we’re interested in today. Although some of this is unique to music, there are interesting lessons to be learnt about honesty and openness with your customers, as well as getting the balance right between promoting but not overdoing it. In a blog post, Joel makes the analogy with a roller coaster. Even if everyone loves the rollercoaster, they’re eventually going to get sick of it. We know this is true; products and services have a lifespan. They either reach saturation or a competitor creates a better or cheaper option. This is why you need a theme park; a rich variety of experiences, some small, some big. Not only does this attract a wider audience but it also keeps the core audience more engaged. It’s all about building a world. For businesses, the point of creating this world is that your customers feel like they are getting more from you than just the product or service that they paid for. And the benefit works two ways. For the customer, they get better support and advice, as well as some entertainment, depending on the kind of world you build. For you, the business, you create a core audience that you don’t really need to sell to; they are already involved, they know what new things are coming up and when they’re going to be available. They are practically marketing you to each other. When it comes to Joel’s honesty, he combines it with a dry sense of humour. Just look at his album titles: For Lack of a Better Name album title goes here W:2016ALBUM What he’s saying here is that he doesn’t know how to dress this up and sell it, all he cared about was the music, that he put all his effort into creating it, not on planning how to make money out of it. I try to build a billion dollar startup in Startup Freak. This is a new game by PulPul Games. You hire staff, raise venture capital, build a marketing plan, develop software features and fix bugs, performance and add automated tests, rack servers in data centers and more. Keep your staff happy with bean bag chairs and espresso machines. Don't forget the ms. pacman machine! In this episode: I build out more features, bug fixes, security and performance enhancements and managed to get cash flow positive (revenues greater than expenses). I also hired on some more people to fill up the office and gave them some things to play with. I learned some tips along the way. (see below). Some tips I learned: - set your CEO pay to $0 (she/he won't quit) - make sure to have good test coverage - have security cover most/all features - upgrade all your features - allow people to quit due to low pay (easy to replace) - the concord server has great capacity vs. price (fill the racks with this in all data centers before jumping to the calibrato - always be doing market research as it unlocks great things - do requested features first - if your customers want design before tech then do 4 block features which are 1 dev 3 design - if churn is higher than signups ramp down ads until fixed (or else you're just burning money) - get each marketing skill up to 7 (unlocks all marketing types) beyond this there isn't much point unless you have a massive budget - once you have branding 9% bonus there is not point researching it more. - performance enhancements on requested features give very nice boosts - when churn hits 0, ramp up your marketing budget. The lemonade stand is often one of the first experiences people have with running a business. You learn about marketing. What will your sign say and how will it look? What will you charge for your lemonade? Can you charge more when it’s hot out? You also learn one of the harder lessons about business: the difference between sales and profits. If a kid collects $20 selling lemonade for an afternoon, she might think she gets to keep all the money. And sometimes she can if mom provides all the lemons, sugar, and cups for free. But in a real business, you have to pay for those things. Let’s say those items cost $17. In this case, total sales are the $20 collected from the customers and the profit is the amount left after all costs are paid… $3. Most businesses have pretty low profit margins…. that is the profit made on each sales dollar. For example, grocery stores only keep $0.02 on every dollar they collect from customers. And restaurants only get a little more… around $0.03 for every dollar in food they sell. That can add up if you own a chain of grocery stores or restaurants. But, most business owners don’t own multiple locations. When governments add new regulations onto businesses, (even well-intended rules like requiring them to pay for healthcare, charging them for special licenses, or telling business how much to pay their employees) business owners have to figure out how to pay for those additional costs out of those low profits. This often means reducing the number of employees, switching to more self-service, or increasing prices. So the next time you hear about a new government requirement for business, just remember that they have to figure out how to pay for it. Too often, the result is a lost job or higher prices for you.

I try to build a billion dollar startup in Startup Freak. This is a new game by PulPul Games. You hire staff, raise venture capital, build a marketing plan, develop software features and fix bugs, performance and add automated tests, rack servers in data centers and more. Keep your staff happy with bean bag chairs and espresso machines. Don't forget the ms. pacman machine! In this episode: I build out the features and try to get revenue higher than expenses and almost get there. I've already sold a lot of the company so want to become profitable without raising more money. I learned some tips along the way. (see below). Some tips I learned: - set your CEO pay to $0 (she/he won't quit) - make sure to have good test coverage - have security cover most/all features - upgrade all your features - allow people to quit due to low pay (easy to replace) - the concord server has great capacity vs. price (fill the racks with this in all data centers before jumping to the calibrato - always be doing market research as it unlocks great things - do requested features first - if your customers want design before tech then do 4 block features which are 1 dev 3 design - if churn is higher than signups ramp down ads until fixed (or else you're just burning money) - get each marketing skill up to 7 (unlocks all marketing types) beyond this there isn't much point unless you have a massive budget - once you have branding 9% bonus there is not point researching it more. - performance enhancements on requested features give very nice boosts - when churn hits 0, ramp up your marketing budget. There’s a general belief that mobile shopping apps retain eCommerce customers or could be used to maintain customers loyalty, but from experience I’m sad to announce to you that in reality, this is not as it seems (Ask Konga & Jumia). If you are not creating a mobile application for a specific function useful to customer’s engagement such as: loyalty reward app, video app, Ubber, games etc. then this is an unnecessary marketing engagement strategy. Building a mobile shopping app especially in Nigeria is a waste of money because email marketing, push notifications, social media marketing are all cost effective engagement tools that converts as oppose to a mobile app that will be deleted by user in months when trying to secure space on their mobile device. The cost of acquisition, maintenance and ads placement are lots of money to be thrown away when an application is deleted. Not to totally write off mobile application for shopping, you can create a mobile application strictly for loyalty reward, making customers realize your app is design to give away weekly discount or play games for special giveaways. My point: If your company services app doesn't solve a generally desired problem e.g travelling app, map, edit app, news app etc. other than just selling, don't waste money on mobile applications.
