Game Design Classics: Quake

19:18
Welcome to game design classics, a video series where I take a look back at some of the influential video games from the past. Today we'll be taking a look at ID software's 1996 release; Quake, and answering some important questions: What did Quake bring to the table on release? How did Quake influence the gaming world? and most importantly... is Quake still fun to play today? This is a new series on the Armitage Games channel, so if you'd like to see more videos like this, let me know! -- Bannerman: http://www.bannermangame.com Web: http://www.armitagegames.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArmitageGames

Doom 1 (1993)

02:12
No words required... This and Doom 2 have been part of my teenage years. video game by id Software. It is widely recognized for having popularized the first person shooter genre, pioneering immersive 3D graphics as well as true third dimension spatiality, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications via packaged files in a data archive known as "WADs", after the extension of the data files containing the mods, which is an acronym for Where is All the Data.[3] Its graphic and interactive violence,[4] as well as its Satanic imagery, also made it the subject of considerable controversy. With a third of the game (9 levels) distributed as shareware, Doom was played by an estimated 10 million people within two years of its release, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture; as a sign of its effect on the industry, games from the mid-1990s boom of first-person shooters are often known simply as "Doom clones". According to GameSpy, Doom was voted by industry insiders to be the greatest game of all time in 2004.[5] The game was made available on Steam on August 3, 2007.[6] The Doom franchise was continued with the follow-up Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994) and numerous expansion packs, including The Ultimate Doom (1995), Master Levels for Doom II (1995), and Final Doom (1996). Originally released for PC/DOS, these games have later been ported to many other platforms, including nine different game consoles, Rockbox firmware, and even PDAs and the Flash Player virtual machine. The series lost mainstream appeal as the technology of the Doom game engine was surpassed in the mid-1990s, although fans have continued making WADs, speedruns, and modifications to the source code released in 1997. The franchise again received popular attention in 2004 with the release of Doom 3, a retelling of the original game using new technology, and an associated 2005 Doom motion picture. Doom 3 generally received high marks for its use of realistic lighting and other effects, but many earlier Doom fans panned it for not staying more faithful to the original series, to which it had little resemblance. On May 7, 2008, following speculation by John Carmack at QuakeCon on August 3, 2007, Doom 4 was announced as in production. The game is neither a sequel to Doom 3 nor a new beginning of the franchise and it will use the company's new id Tech 5 engine. Since April 10, 2009, no more information about the new game was given. On June 26, 2009, John Carmack released Doom Resurrection, a new game developed by Escalation Studios for the iPhone OS and published by id Software. The setting for Doom Resurrection takes place parallel to Doom 3, and it uses the characters and art from the previously developed game.

In this clip, I talk about how I learned how to make video games. It was a process of trial and error, and learning was done through web resources and books. Wolfenstein 3D - Did You Know Gaming? Feat. Nostalgia Trip

07:47
SUBSCRIBE for more PC Gaming Facts ► http://bit.ly/DYKG_Subscribe The Simpsons Facts ► http://bit.ly/2r7qHWI Nostalgia Trip ► http://bit.ly/2rsop7I In this episode of Did You Know Gaming we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Wolfenstein 3D. Wolfenstein 3D was developed by id Software and was inspired by the 1981 video game Castle Wolfenstein. In Wolfenstein 3D, the player assumes the role of William "B.J." Blazkowicz during World War II as he escapes from Castle Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein 3D was the second major release by id Software, after the Commander Keen series. The company decided to shift from the family-friendly Keen to a more violent theme for their games, with programmer John Romero suggesting they remake the 1981 stealth shooter Castle Wolfenstein as an action game. The game was designed to be fast and violent, unlike other computer games on the market. Wolfenstein 3D sold over 200,000 copies by the end of 1993, and is widely regarded as having helped popularize the first-person shooter genre. The game also saw success on home consoles such as the Super Nintendo (SNES). Through our analysis of Wolfenstein 3D, its gameplay and beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts we found during the making of the game so you can have its history explained. Doom Slayer: The Hell Jumper | Quake Champions | 1440p60

08:16
The Doom Slayer's ability to double jump makes navigating maps a lot easier. Jumps are shown with keypresses and speed visible, and explained with slow motion and freeze frames. However, involuntarily initiating a double jump, due to surface geometry, can cause problems. Using autohopping maybe the solution. But then again it appears to be a somewhat "unclean" practice. Apart from that there is a bit of gaming history contained in the video. Namely the origin of the double jump. Games shown, in order of appearance: ID SOFTWARE. 2016. Doom [computer game]. The graphical overlay employed I made myself. The footage was recorded via Shadowplay. The editing was done in Vegas Pro 13, the voiceover recorded with Audacity. Ultimate Doom Gameplay 6/9

06:49
Ultimate Doom Gameplay 6/9. Doom (occasionally typeset as DOOM[1]) is a landmark 1993 first-person shooter computer game by id Software. It is widely recognized for popularizing the first person shooter genre, pioneering immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for custom expansions (WADs). Its graphic and interactive violence[2] has also made Doom the subject of much controversy reaching outside the gaming world. According to GameSpy, Doom was voted by industry insiders to be the greatest game of all time in 2004.[3] The Doom franchise was continued with Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994) and numerous expansion packs, including The Ultimate Doom (1995), Master Levels for Doom II (1995), and Final Doom (1996). The setting for Doom Resurrection takes place parallel to Doom 3, and it uses the characters and art of from the previously developed game.

Part 19 of 38 Another great game by ID Software. I still prefer Doom 3, but this is awesome too. For pretty much the first half of this playthrough, a lot of my commentary was rather boring. It hasn't been sitting around finished for that long though, I breaks, and finished recording on March 18th 2009.
