1968 Summer Olympics, Black Power Salute

04:34
An Inspiring Act of Bravery. Willing to sacrifice ALL for justice. Tommie Smith, Dr. John Carlos & Peter Norman. "We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference." --Nelson Mandela Follow us @ https://www.facebook.com/iloveancestry https://twitter.com/LovingAncestry http://iloveancestry.tumblr.com http://pinterest.com/iloveancestry It was expected that Americans would dominate the track at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Indeed, when the men's 200-meter began, American Tommie Smith led the pack, sprinting ahead to take gold. Heading into the home stretch, it looked as if teammate and world-record holder John Carlos would win silver, but Australian Peter Norman edged him out, bounding down the straightaway to take silver and leaving Carlos with bronze. But it's what happened next that would make history. Smith and Carlos stood on the podium wearing black socks without shoes to symbolize black poverty in the U.S. Carlos wore a strand of colorful beads to protest lynching. They bowed their heads as The Star Spangled Banner played, and raised their fists — clad in black leather gloves — in salutes to Black Power and unity. It was a gesture seen around the world, and an enduring symbol of political resistance. Winning the 200 meter, John Carlos accepted the Bronze medal at the Olympic podium wearing black socks and no shoes to represent impoverished people who had no shoes of their own, and raised a black-gloved fist crowning a bowed head to humbly reflect the strength of the human spirit. Headlines were made around the globe and the photograph of the three medalists standing peaceably in protest at the ceremonial podium instantaneously became a historical symbol of the fight for human rights. "We owe it to our Ancestors and to the sacrifices that they made, to continue to achieve higher goals, while maintaining our identity. Stand Up! Stand OUT!" This fleeting moment, though, came out of the deep-rooted struggle for racial equality gripping America. Smith and Carlos had been part of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which, founded in 1967, had originally called upon black athletes to boycott the Summer Games. The movement's mission statement asked, "Why should we run in Mexico only to crawl home?" Ultimately the group decided against the boycott, but Smith and Carlos embodied their message of protest. Australian Peter Norman wore an OPHR patch on his jacket during the ceremony as a symbol of solidarity. "I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." --Nelson Mandela In a 2008 op-ed for the L.A. Times, basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who had been asked to try out for the '68 Olympic basketball team, described what watching that moment meant. "Whites were outraged, blacks felt some rush of pride," he wrote. Carlos, who would go on to equal the world record in the 100-meter, win an NCAA championship title and even play a short stint in the NFL, spoke in Chicago this year. Speaking to an audience of young poets and activists, he said that now, when asked by photographers to raise his fist for the camera, he instead instructs them to find a young person to photograph. "Let some young man or woman raise their fist," he said. "I want them to see that we've moved on to the next generation." DR. JOHN CARLOS FACEBOOK FAN PAGE http://ow.ly/lqWDl

October 16, 1968 - U.S. Olympic Sprinters Protest Racial Inequality

02:26
The 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City may be most remembered not for an athletic accomplishment, but for a silent act of protest. On October 16 of that year, two African American sprinters who placed first and third in the 200-meter dash – Tommie Smith and John Carlos – used their medal ceremony to make a statement. As the national anthem played, the two men raised black gloved fists in silent protest against racial discrimination in the United States. Smith raised his right first to represent black power; Carlos raised his left to indicate black unity. They wore black socks and no shoes to signify black poverty in America. Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to represent black pride; Carlos wore a string of beads around his neck in memory of those who were lynched. Two days later, Smith and Carlos were expelled from the Olympic village, and were banned from participating in future Olympic Games. The men returned home to intense criticism for the perceived disrespect shown by the protest, but were hailed as heroes to the African American community. As time passed, the symbolic importance of their protest came to be more widely recognized and the image of the men with fists in the air and heads bowed is one of the most enduring symbols of the American civil rights struggle. The other medalist awarded in that ceremony, Australian sprinter Peter Norman, supported the protest. Along with Smith and Carlos, Norman wore a small badge over his heart for the Olympic Project for Human Rights, an organization opposing racism in sports. He also returned home a pariah and despite being ranked fifth in the world, and qualifying for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, he was denied a spot on the Australian Olympic team. In 2012, a posthumous apology was issued by the Australian Parliament for the treatment Norman received after the 1968 games. Hosted by the late D'Army BaileyBailey, Moments in Civil Rights History is produced in collaboration with the Equal Justice Initiative and is part of Comcast NBCUniversal’s “His Dream, Our Stories” project. Pagan Origins of the Olympic Games vs Today's Games

23:56
The Total Pagan Entertainment Package The Olympic Games are one of the most highly anticipated events in the sports world today. The Games are a huge event, attracting athletes from nearly every country. Although it has turned into a marketing and merchandising behemoth, the original purpose of the Olympic Games was a far less secular one. During the early years of the Olympics, events were held not as a way to collect multimillion-dollar endorsements, but to honor the gods of ancient Greece. The early Olympic Games have been called the "total pagan entertainment package" by author Tony Perrottet, author of The Naked Olympics: The True Story of the Ancient Games. The Games featured art, poetry readings, writers, plays, painters and sculptors. There were street shows including fire eaters, jugglers, dancers, acrobats and palm readers. Also important was the notion that war was put on hold during the Games. While the Greeks knew better than to try forming permanent truces with their enemies, it was understood that there was a moratorium on fighting during the Olympics. This allowed athletes, vendors, and fans to travel safely to and from the city for the Games, without having to worry about being attacked by marauding bands of mercenaries. Honoring Zeus For the citizens of Greece, the Olympics were a time of great religious celebration. Athletic events were mixed in with sacrifices, rituals, and prayer, as well as great feasting and revelry. For over a thousand years, the Games were held every four years, which made them not only the longest-running athletic event in history, but also one of the longest-running regular religious observations. The games were originally held in honor of Zeus, king of the Olympians. The very first Games consisted of only one athletic event - it was a footrace, which was won by a cook named Korobois. Athletes made regular sacrifices to Zeus (typically pigs or sheep, but other animals would do as well), in hopes that he would recognize them and honor them for their skill and talents. During opening ceremonies, athletes lined up before a giant statue of Zeus holding a thunderbolt, and swore an oath to him in his Temple at Olympia. All Roads Lead to the Olympics Athletes participated in events in the nude. Although there's no clear reason as to why this is the case, historians attribute it to a rite of passage for young Greek men. Nudity was important to the Greeks and they weren't bothered by it. However, many other cultures of the time found it off-putting that the Greeks were oiling each other up and then rolling around on a wrestling floor. The Egyptians and Persians felt that there was something a bit degenerate about the whole thing. While young women were allowed to attend the Games if they were brought in by their father or brother, married women never came to the festivities. Prostitutes were everywhere at the Olympics, and were often imported by merchants from far-off locations. A prostitute could make a significant amount of money during an event as big as the Olympic Games. Sometimes, as many as 40,000 people showed up, so that was a lot of potential clients. Some of the prostitutes were hetaeras, or high-priced escorts, but many were priestesses from temples dedicated to Aphrodite, goddess of love. The End of the Games Around 400 c.e., the Roman emperor Theodosius decided the Olympic Games were too pagan in nature, and banned them completely. This was part of the Roman Empire's shift towards Christianity. During Theodosius' youth, he was tutored by the bishop Ambrose of Milan. Theodosius passed a number of laws that were designed to eliminate Greco-Roman paganism completely, as well as doing away with the rituals and ceremonies that celebrated the old pagan religions of Greece and Rome. To make Christianity the state religion, all vestiges of the old ways had to be eliminated, and that included the Olympic Games. Be sure to read more on the Olympics from N.S. Gill at About Ancient History. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "I will not be inquired of by you. The prisoners are waving their own Olympic flag and lighting an Olympic torch in the San Pedro Prison Olympics. Some 400 inmates in San Pedro prison, on the outskirts of Lima, are holding their own Olympic games from Tuesday. Soccer, boxing, and baseball are the games expected to attract the most attention, but there are also individual games like chess, table tennis and athletics. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) The aim is mostly to keep our unity and to communicate to the public the efforts we are making towards rehabilitation. One of the ways is through sports. A sound body makes a sound mind. SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Chicoma, Prisoner Spokesman Each wing of the prison has its own representatives and they compete against each other. The director of the prison can only see advantages in their Olympics. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) It's a recreational sports activity that helps us entertain the prisoners while they participate in the competition. The prisoners do their best to be outstanding and take the prize to their prison wing. SUPER CAPTION: Col. The BBC perfectly encapsulated the Rio Olympics in one bold

06:37
Imperfectly perfect. That’s how the BBC closed their incredible video reviewing two weeks of the 2016 Olympic Games. An event held in an utterly flawed location, with real-world problems and the constant threat of a facade falling apart at any moment. Holding the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro began with concerns about violence, Zika and pollution, and ended with the city itself being just as problematic as always, but also, somehow, still managing to showcase its beauty. Dozens of networks will do their own "Rio review" type videos. Many will concentrate on the games themselves, which went off relatively hitch-free, but the BBC didn’t pull any punches in both highlighting how great the athletic performances were while not shying away from the troubles Rio faced, and will face into the future. Honestly, I could prattle on for 1,000 more words about how good this video is. Just watch it.

Here we shall trace the origin of this Games and reveal some interesting anecdotes about it. The origin of the games dates back to 8th century B.C and was conducted in honour of the Greek God Zeus. Basically it was a religious festival and held at Olympia. The athletes who participated were all males and came from every corner of the Greek empire. The sanctuary as it was called was named Mt. Olympos the highest mountain in Greece and also because it was considered the home of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The first race to be held was in 776B.C called the stadion race. It was a foot race 600ft long. Some sources say this was the only athletic event held for a long time. The Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost 12 centuries. The first modern day Olympics was held in Athens in the year1896 almost 1503 years after it was started.Baron Pierre de Courbetin a Frenchman is given the credit for having restarted the games in the modern era. Delegates from 34 countries participated in the preliminary meeting to restart the games and though Courbetin wanted to hold it in Paris his homeland the delegates convinced him to move it to Athens. The idea of the Olympic flame had its birth in the games at Amsterdam in 1928 but the modern torch relay was inaugurated in Berlin in1936, The Olympic oath was instituted in 1920. Initially the ancient games was a five day programme and today it is a fortnightly e vent. The idea of holding the Winter Olympics came to the fray in1924 and from 1994 it was decided to alternate the summer and winter games. The Olympic flag was instituted in 1908 using the primary colours which would be found in every country’s flag. The five rings represent the continents and their unity. The motto Citius ,Altius Fortius Meaning Faster, Higher and Stronger have motivated athletes and sportsmen and women all over the world to achieve new landmarks in their fields of specialization. In addition to this the Olympics have added a nother feather to their cap by introducing the Paralympics Olympics. The entire event is of such a magnificent nature that organizing it is no easy task. This is done by the International Olympic association with representatives from all countries. This association is the parent body with the countries associations affiliated to it. They exercise immense influence and are well financed and equipped to handle this event. What started as a religious event has turned out to be a popular event viewed with great enthusiasm. A country’s sporting prowess is determined by the medals tally in the games.

IOC tells PyeongChang it can hold some 2018 Olympic events in other cities if it

02:05
And we start with news that PyeongChang... the host city for the 2018 Winter Olympics is going to be offered the opportunity to share some of the burden of holding the global sporting event with other cities outside of Korea. The final decision will rest with PyeongChang′s organizing committee. The International Olympic Committee′s move is part of reforms aimed at cutting the costs for host cities. Song Ji-sun reports. It took PyeongChang three attempts to win the rights to host the Winter Olympics... but when the flame is lit... and the Games get underway... in February 2018... some of the events could be taking place elsewhere. The International Olympic Committee has offered the PyeongChang Organizing Committee the chance to host some of the events in other countries. The decision will be PyeongChang′s to make though. The IOC′s coordination commissioner Gunilla Lindberg told AP that PyeongChang gets the final say on whether the Games stay within the city or whether it takes the opportunity to host some events elsewhere. These proposals are part of IOC President Thomas Bach′s package of reforms dubbed ′Agenda 2020.′ The agenda is part of the IOC′s bid to change the Olympic Games to better adapt in the changing world, for financial and sustainability reasons. According to the IOC, hosting sledding events in pre-existing venues would save PyeongChang 120 million U.S. dollars in construction costs... and up to five million dollars a year in maintenance. After voting on ′Agenda 2020′ on Monday and Tuesday,... the IOC will hand over a list of potential cities to the PyeongChang Organizing Committee... which has until March to make its decision. The candidates include Nagano in Japan and Salt Lake City in the U.S., as well as ten other sites in Europe, America and Asia. PyeongChang organizers are said to be looking at all available options, but say long-term plans have been drawn up for the venues and construction has already begun. Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

Learn Vocabulary: Sports of the Winter Olympics

14:33
What's your favourite winter sport? Is it figure skating or luge? Do you know what luge is? In preparation for this year's Olympic Games in South Korea, watch this English vocabulary lesson on Olympic winter sports. In this lesson, you will learn about hockey, skiing, snowboarding, curling, and more. Do you know all the different types of sledding? The Olympic Games take place every four years. Watch the video to ensure that this year, you are ready to talk sports. https://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-sports-winter-olympics/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's lesson we're going to talk about the Winter Olympics. They're just around the corner, and I figured it's a good idea that you know what's going on if you're interested in winter sports. I'm going to tell you about the different events that you can watch, and what the different words are that they're talking about on TV. Okay? Because this year the Olympics are in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which is the northern part of South Korea, but not North Korea. It's a little bit confusing. The northern part of South Korea. And all the regular events are there, so I'm going to walk you through them and make sure you know which ones you like, which ones you want to watch, adjust your calendars, your timetables because if you live in a different part of the world, you may have to watch them during the night. So, we're going to start with the events and then I'll give you some general Olympics' vocabulary. Let's start with skating. Okay? We're going to... There're different events for skating. There's speed skating which happens around a long track, an oval track, and people basically race each other; then there's short track speed skating-sorry-and basically this is like a very short... It's almost like a little circle, and you have five or six guys, and they just basically have a race and they're trying to finish first; and whoever finished first, second, etc., they go on and they have a few rounds of this. Okay? They have different rounds, and the winner of each one or the top two of each race go to the next round, the next round until you have a final round, and then the winner gets gold, second place gets silver, etc., or in bronze. So, this is a very exciting event because there're always crashes, and they go around really, really fast, and they're like... Basically almost sideways because they're on their skates going around in a circle all the time, very exciting to watch. Then, of course, there's figure skating, which is one of the more... One of the most popular events during the Winter Olympics. There are men's, women's, and pairs figure skating, and I think there's also a dance figure skating, it's a little bit different. And basically they're on the rink, so the ice surface, or the... The building they're in is the arena and the actual ice surface is called a rink. And there they do all kinds of performances. It's very acrobatic. Now, you might hear all the different names of the movements they make, like double axel and cow something, these I don't actually know because you have to actually know something about figure skating, but you can just watch it. It's very beautiful to watch, beautiful music and they wear their costumes. Their costumes are just basically they create for themselves, they're custom-made costumes you can call them, and they go around, they do all these acrobatic things. There're two components to it, there's the technical and then there's the artistic. So they do this on two occasions, and they get a scaled score, basically up to six or five, 5.2, 5.5, etc., and whoever has the best score, obviously gets the gold medal. And the one component is the technical where they have to do certain number of routines, certain number of movements. And the second one is artistic where they have to basically involve those movements, but also according to the music, according to the style, etc. Okay? Very popular. And of course they're wearing figure skates. That's the only real equipment they need, except for their costumes. Speed skaters, they wear a different type of skate. It's a much longer blade, okay? So they're basically on blade. They're basically on, like, two or three milli-... Or three or four millimetres of metal, that's all that's holding them up. Very sharp edges to the blades, and that's what they go around on, etc. Okay? So, figure skating. Skiing, that's another common and very popular sport in the Olympics. All types of different events that involve skiing. Alpine skiing is basically coming down a mountain, and there's a slalom, basically it's a very long... They're on the slope of the mountain, and it's a very long course. Okay? And they come down and whoever has the best time... So, there's two ways to do it, there's time and there's also races for different things, but Alpine is usually time trial. Now, there's cross-country skiing which is flat but long distance. […]

Wide shot Shintaro Ishihara, Governor of Tokyo, on stage 5. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Shintaro Ishihara, Governor of Tokyo: "Japan has been in perfect peace for the 60 years since the end of World War Two. I believe that holding the Olympics in this peaceful Japan would make a big contribution to supporting world peace. Also, Japan has the very latest in environmentally friendly technology - holding the Olympics here will send a strong pro-environmental message to the world." 6. Cutaway journalist reading copy of bid 7. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Tsunekazu Takeda, President of Japanese Olympic Committee and Vice President of Tokyo 2016: "At all Olympics Games up until now, equestrian events and sailing have been held in very remote locations. In the Beijing Olympics, equestrian events were held in Hong Kong and sailing was in Qingdao. We are going to have 95 percent of events held within an 8 kilometre radius. It's going to be a very compact Olympics." 8. Wide shot of Ishihara, officials and athletes on stage posing holding bid 9. Pan down from sign reading "Tokyo 2016 Candidate City" to Ishihara and Takeda holding bid STORYLINE: Japan's Olympic committee on Friday publicly released details of its bid to host the 2016 Summer Games in Tokyo, a day after submitting its official bid books to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The bid books were delivered to the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday, and so were allowed to be released to the public on Friday. The documents, which run into hundreds of pages and are spread over several volumes, provide detailed answers to a questionnaire from the IOC about all facets of the bids, including budgets, sports venues, government guarantees, hotel accommodation, security and transportation. Tokyo is competing with Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. Madrid and Rio de Janeiro organisers submitted their official bid books on Wednesday, a day ahead of the deadline. The IOC will select the host city by secret ballot on October 2 in Copenhagen. Tokyo, which hosted the 1964 Olympics, said it had already secured 4 billion US dollars to fund construction of venues, saying it was best positioned to weather the global economic downturn. Tokyo is promising a compact and environmentally friendly games, and is reportedly considering the building of Olympic-related facilities with electricity from "green energy" sources including solar and wind power. It said 23 of its proposed 34 venues already exist and that land has been secured for the 11 new facilities needed. The IOC evaluation commission, chaired by executive board member Nawal El Moutawakel, will study the bid files and visit the four cities. The panel will first go to Chicago from April 4-7, followed by stops in Tokyo from April 16-19, Rio from April 29- May 2 and Madrid from May 5-8. The commission will issue a report assessing the bids in September, a month before the Copenhagen vote. Critics have described Olympic bid books as works of fiction because their projections often differ from reality years later. How many of the 115 IOC members will actually read the bid books from cover to cover is a different matter, but, more than ever, financial issues will be closely scrutinised because of the economic downturn. What's certain is that no city can match the spending of China, which invested more than 40 billion US dollars on new venues and infrastructure for last year's Beijing Olympics. TORCH JOURNEY With the theme to his signature movie, "Rocky," blaring in the background, actor Sylvester Stallone took the Olympic torch on Wednesday and carried it on the first leg of what was to be a winding journey through Los Angeles. A beaming Stallone, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the blue Athens Olympic logo, called it the proudest moment of his life and the "greatest honour" he has ever had. When the Olympic fanfare began to play, Stallone trotted off on a brief lap to the ocean, then headed toward Santa Monica, pumping both arms in the air as more than 1,000 people cheered him on. The torch flew arrived Wednesday morning from Mexico and now begins the US leg of its journey towards the summer Olympic Games in Athens. Others scheduled to carry the torch include actor Tom Cruise, heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, quadruple Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Janet Evans, and Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson. Los Angeles hosted the summer Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984. The flame is to visit other former Olympic cities in North America including St. Louis on Thursday, Atlanta on Friday, New York on Saturday, and Montreal on Sunday. The flame's 46,800-mile journey began June 4 and is due to end in Athens at the Opening Ceremony on August 13.
