They are especially useful for the beginning student of Russian. To use just play the video before sleeping... If you want to really learn Russian, the best way is to listen and speak the most common Russian phrases as often and as accurately as possible. If you want to learn Russian well, these videos will help you do that. And doing it in a relaxed way is even better!!!! Looking for a Russian teacher? Try Italki. They have tons of teachers that you can talk to online. https://www.italki.com/i/C6FDED The idea is to be in as relaxed or calm a state as possible. Put on headphones if you need to. How to Speak English - Pronunciation for Russian Speakers

10:04
Want to speak English more naturally? This lesson is designed specifically for our Russian students. It addresses pronunciation of consonants, such as 'W' and 'V', which are difficult for Russian speakers. Often, Russians speak English very well, with almost perfect grammar. Watch this lesson and practice your pronunciation with me so that you can speak, and be understood, clearly. Although this lesson explores pronunciation issues that Russian speakers struggle with, all ESL students can benefit from the practice. Удачи! http://www.engvid.com/english-pronunciation-for-russian-speakers/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. Welcome back to EngVid. Today, we're doing a pronunciation lesson. It's particularly designed for Russian speakers who -- I had some experience of working in a language school this summer, and there were mistakes that I noticed from some of the Russian-speaking folks. But it's also a lesson to really drill pronunciation for speakers of first languages -- if it's Spanish, French, German -- whatever your first language is, it will be a useful lesson for you. So do stay tuned, and let's work on crystal clear, crisp pronunciation for all of you. Okay. We're just going to be looking mainly at consonant noises, sounds, today. And then, a little bit on how we use our pitch to suggest that what we are saying is a question. Is that right? Yes, it is. So first of all, the difference between T and D. T, T, T, T. Okay? I'm flicking my tongue along the roof of my mouth. T, T -- okay? But when I do D, D, D, I'm making more of a sound. D, D, D. Okay. T, T, T -- it's kind of without the force of my breath. But when I do D, D, D, I put more weight behind it -- D. Okay? So we're going to do this side, and then this side. Please repeat after me. Ten, den. Ten, den. Try, dry. Latter, ladder. Whiter, wider. Bent, bend. Mate, made. Good. So you all know the meanings of this. Obviously, the number ten. "Den" is like an outdoor little house. "Try" -- put in effort. "Dry" -- the opposite of "wet". "Latter", as in "the last". "Ladder" to climb up. "Whiter" teeth than you. "Wider" than him. "Bent" -- "bend", the process, the verb of bending. "Mate" -- my friend. "Made" in Chelsea." Okay? Where something is produced. Now, we're looking particularly at the dark L, the stronger L, L, L. So it's a sound that I make quite back in my mouth. L, L. Again, the tongue is kind of doing that, but it's back in my mouth -- L. Whereas R, R, R, it's further forward, further forward. L, L, R, R. See what my mouth is doing? R, okay? R, R. It's kind of opening and coming down -- R. Let's practice here. Load, road. Load, road. Lice, rice. Liver, river. Fly, fry, fry. This is a difficult one because you've got the F followed by the R -- F, R, F, F, F, F, F. So I'm using my bottom lip down here -- F -- flicking it up to the stop lip. F -- rye. Fry, fry. Belly, berry. Belly, berry. Okay. So that dark L and the R. I also noticed some difficulty with the nasal -- the nose sound NG. Okay? When I do that NG sound, I should feel vibration here in my nose. NG. Have a go at home. NG. Okay, focus that noise out here through your nose. And let's go for "sing". Okay? Feel the vibration in your nose. Ring, bring, fling, thing. Again, let's check the meaning. "Sing", obviously "sing" a song. "Ring" on my finger. "Bring" me a cake. "Fling" a pen; throw -- also means "romance", a fling. And "thing" is an object. Okay? Now, we're on to TH. Oh, just having a bit of a malfunction of the old wardrobe. Don't worry; my trousers aren't falling down. We're okay. We're okay. Now, obviously, there's no TH sound in the Russian alphabet, so it's going to be particularly difficult for Russians. TH, TH. So my lip is going to my upper jaw and to the front teeth. They, they. Okay. Make sure your tongue comes right forward to the tip of your teeth. They, they. And it just nestles under there under your teeth. They. They, dey. They, dey. There, dare. Thy, die. Then, den. Southern, sudden. Okay. Let's do it one more time. They, dey -- misspelling. Dey -- that sounds like a kind of Jamaican phrase. "Dey people over there, man. Dey [inaudible]." Okay. But I actually mean "day" with an A. Okay? There, dare. Thy, die. Then, den. Southern, sudden. "Sudden" meaning "quick"; it happens fast. This, I think, is probably the biggest mistake that Russian speakers would make, the confusion between W and V. W, V -- vibration here in the lips -- V -- and release -- V -- release. West, vest. Went, vent. Wire, via. This is a really confusing one, wire and via. Also, for German speakers, this is relevant. Wary, vary. Wiper, viper. Okay? W and V -- feel the vibration here. W -- okay, watch what I'm doing -- W.

In this lesson, you will learn about -ed and -ing word endings, the difference in pronunciation between the north and south of England, the schwa sound, the pronunciation of the R sound in English, the tricky "th" sound, and more. Whether you want to perfect your pronunciation or learn about different accents, this video is for you. After watching, complete the quiz to test your understanding. http://www.engvid.com/8-tips-for-british-english-pronunciation/ Want to train your British accent? Get my free British accent training pack: https://jadejoddle.com/coaching-tools/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is some pronunciation tips for British English. Some of them are tips; some of them are observations that you might be interested to know. We've got eight of them, so let's get started. Pronunciation of-ed word endings. This is not specifically a British English issue. If your preference -- I don't know why I can't speak suddenly in an English pronunciation video, but that's how it is. If your preference is American English, this also applies to American English. So what I hear a lot at, sort of, around intermediate level -- sometimes upper intermediate level if you haven't had someone to correct you -- -ed word endings sound like this. I can't even do it because it's so unnatural for me. "Excite-ed shout-ed, remind-ed." It's so unnatural for me. But in fact, it's not like that. It doesn't sound like an -ed. It might sound like an /id/; it might sound like a /t/; or it might sound like a /d/. So I've got some examples here. This word, even though it's spelled -ed, makes an /id/ sound. It becomes "excited". "I'm really excited." "Shouted." "He shouted at me." "Reminded." "I reminded you to do your homework; didn't I?" And -- yeah. So now, we can talk about the ones that finish with a t sound. "Finished. Dripped. Laughed." They don't have the-ed sound. So that's an important thing to know about pronunciation. Even if it's spelled-ed, it doesn't mean it sounds like that. And what about the ones that end with a d sound, a "duh" sound. "Remembered." "I remembered what you said to me." "Called." "I called you. Didn't you hear your phone?" "Imagined." "I imagined a better future for everyone." So with those, it's a D sound. How do you know for each one? Go with what feels most natural when you're saying the word. The main thing is don't force the -ed sound at the end of the word because it's that that gives you an unnatural rhythm when you're speaking English. So moving on to -- this one's an observation, really. British English pronunciation. We have so many different accents in England. But one of the biggest divisions in our accents is -- it's between the north of the country and the south, and it's our pronunciation of these words: "bath" and "laugh", as I say them. I say them in the southern pronunciation. But if I were from the north -- if I were from the north of the country, I'd say "bath" and "laugh" because they have a different accent up there. Well, they've got loads of different accents, but they don't speak in the same way as me. So let's break it down into the actual sound. So if you're from the North, you say, "a". But we, in the South, say "au". So you say "bath", we say "bauth". And you say "laf"; we say "laugh". And you can also hear it in these two words. It doesn't have to be the first or only a vowel in the word. In the southern pronunciation, this is "commaund". But in the northern pronunciation, it's "command". And the southern pronunciation of this word is "caust". The northern pronunciation is "cast". The cast of Brookside came to London." "Brookside" was an old soap that's not on TV anymore, and it was people from Liverpool. And I was just doing the accent. Probably that's really irrelevant to you. You will never see that show, but anyway. You know, now. Next tip. I don't hear this that often, but when I do, it sounds really, really, really wrong. And I think this tip generally -- generally a good example of how -- just because we write something one way doesn't mean we say it that way. So in English -- American English, too -- W sounding words are the same as the "wh" sound in words for spelling. It actually sounds the same. So we've got two words here, "wine" and "whine". One is spelled with WH, and one is just spelled with I. "Whine" is a kind of moan or a kind of cry. Sometimes, young children whine. Sometimes, women who are upset about something are said to be "whiny".

Political vocabulary and expressions in English

08:20
Learn vocabulary and phrases so that you can talk about politics and understand the news! I'll teach you new words and expressions to talk about government, elections, and policy. Is the candidate for president in your country promising to cut the crime rate? Is your president proud of the economic boom in your country. Like the video to vote for me, Benjamin! Take the quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/political-vocabulary-expressions/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there, guys. I thought I'd better dress up and put my glasses on today because I have decided to enter politics. Today's class, we're doing political collocations. "Collocations" -- what a long, funny word. What does it mean? Well, "co" generally means "with", and "location" is a place. So "with place". Political word that go together. So "enter", you often find with politics or center management or a new thing. Okay? "Enter politics." "Today, I decided to enter politics." Great? Got it? "To enter politics." Obviously, you can form this verb. "He entered politics when he was 17." So we can have the past, "he entered". Or you can have the future, "He will" -- you probably wouldn't say "enter", though. You'd probably say "get into". "He will probably get into politics when he's older." Okay? "He will" -- blah, blah, blah. So "enter", present and past, generally. Now, "to hold" -- "hold". "I'm holding a pen." You can also "hold" a general election. It means organize, make sure there is a general election, okay? So David Cameron will hold a general election next year or the year after. I should know. I don't. "To hold a general election." So often, we're going to use that with the future tense, "will hold". Or you could do it with the past tense. "A general election was held in 1992." So, "A general election was held." Okay? So you've got an irregular verb there. Now, "to stand for something". If you want to become an important person, you need to stand for positions of authority and importance. "To stand for the presidency." Yeah, I'm standing here right now, but you can "stand" for a position. So "to stand" for the presidency, if you're in North America. Or in the UK, we might say "stand for the position of prime minister". But normally, you would get voted. People are going to say, "You, you, you." Okay? You don't normally put yourself forward for the prime minister position. "To launch a campaign." I'm launching a rocket into space, okay? I'm beating the Russians. I'm beating the Americans. Benjamin, EngVid, launching a space rocket. Okay? But we can also use "launch" with a "campaign". Notice the funny spelling, the -aign, but it's pronounced "cam-pain". Okay? One of those words where the spelling doesn't look like the sound of the word. "To launch a campaign", a campaign. So I might put posters up all over London saying -- I wouldn't do this, okay, because I'm not, you know, an idiot, but, "Vote for Boris Johnson." Okay? I put a campaign. "Everyone, do this. Do this." It's a campaign. I want people in London to do this. A campaign. I want them to take action. I really wouldn't do that. No. "To win an election", okay? You "win" or "lose" an election. The labor party might win the next general election in the UK. That's my little prediction. Have a little bet on me. "To win an election", right? Okay? Win or lose it. You don't -- in football, we talk about winning or losing or drawing. You don't really draw an election, unless you're David Cameron, in which case you sort of have a bit of a partnership with Nick Clegg. Okay. "To serve four years as" -- of course, the number doesn't have to be four. It could be seven. So you could say, "I served for several years on a committee." Okay? So this is just a number that you put in and then what it is that you did. So, "I served five years as a trivia quiz host in London." Okay? I'm serving. It's an act of giving. I'm cutting up my meat for my dinner. But you can also "cut the crime rate". Yeah? If you're in an inner city ghetto, you need the crime rate to be cut so there are fewer muggings. Yeah? "Cut crime" -- yeah, this is bad activity. "Rate" -- how often it happens. If you cut it, it happens less. "To cut the crime rate." Now, I might want to leave politics. Yeah? We talk about "leaving" -- exiting. You wouldn't say, "I exit politics." "I leave politics to pursue" -- that's a lovely word. Let's get that up on the board. "To pursue" -- to do something else. Right? Good. Try and use this word. It's one of my favourites.

American Accent Training -Free Online Course- Part 1 of 5

01:12:59
American Accent Training: A Guide to Speaking and Pronouncing American English for Everyone Who Speaks English as a Second Language by Ann Cook Download book (PDF Format);185 Pages https://www.file-upload.com/1muts5xhqbta This book and CD set (5 Parts) is designed to get you started on your American accent. We'll follow the book and go through the 13 lessons and all the exercises step by step. Everything is explained and a complete Answer Key may be found in the back of the text. What Is Accent? Accent is a combination of three main components: intonation (speech music), liaisons (word connections), and pronunciation (the spoken sounds of vowels, consonants, and combinations). As you go along, you'll notice that you're being asked to look at accent in a different way. You'll also realize that the grammar you studied before and this accent you're studying now are completely different. Part of the difference is that grammar and vocabulary are systematic and structured— the letter of the language. Accent, on the other hand, is free form, intuitive, and creative— more the spirit of the language. So, thinking of music, feeling, and flow, let your mouth relax into the American accent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe Channels: www.youtube.com/LearnMania https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOW7YlZLZCwMVRVU0Os5XYg Most Popular Audiobooks : The Goal-A Process of Ongoing Improvement https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDXLzaBVdyNCBygphOFVbV-I6qLnS3r1U Crucial Conversations-Audio Book 4.5 Hrs https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1BQN30-bzIqhcqQwtklOOOVcrNOKTBLu Keys to Success-The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtLbJ890d7Y&list=PL1BQN30-bzIpCrSr9CdqfF91_RU4JILMn The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People Audiobook https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdHjr2_4Fz4&list=PL1BQN30-bzIp1G7KQFJjPQmcy5FD24A08 The Alchemist Paulo Coelho Audiobook https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQgqt1BGvJw Principle-Centred Leadership - Audio Book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1c0R9lsPOM&t=3s Learn English- American Stories (10 Stories) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1BQN30-bzIqBO_jRQ2suXa8lFAsmq-PK English Learning Books (Download FREE) Fluent English for any language Speakers ,232 Pages https://www.file-upload.com/0z3f22zl60p1 American Accent Training,185 Pages https://www.file-upload.com/1muts5xhqbta

International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) | English Pronunciation

24:28
This lesson explains the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and how it can help with English pronunciation. I start the lesson by defining the International Phonetic Alphabet and showing why it is so useful. The letters of a word don't help us in knowing how to pronounce it because the same letter can have lots of different sounds in different words. For example, the letter "c" has a very different sound in the word "car" compared to the letter "c" in the word "dice". Also the same phonetic sound can be produced by lots of different combinations of letters. The IPA is a system for representing each phonetic sound with a symbol and we use use these symbols to transcribe the correct pronunciation of a word. In the English language, there are 44 phonetic symbols and sounds made up of vowels (short and long), dipthongs and consonant sounds. In this video, I pronounce all of the 44 sounds (actually called phonemes) and show you the corresponding symbol. On top of these standard 44 sounds, American English has a few other specific sounds which I also pronounce and briefly explain. Among the consonant sounds, there is a set of 8 pairs of consonants - In each pair, there is a voiceless consonant (example "p") and its equivalent voiced consonant (example "b"). Each pair's sound (example both the "p" and "b" sound) is produced by exactly the same mouth and tongue position. The only difference is that the voiceless consonant sound (example "p") is produced only by the mouth whereas the voiced consonant sound (example "b") is produced by the vibrations of the vocal cords in the throat. I also present some IPA special characters which are used to represent the start and end of a phonetic transcription, the stressed syllable and the start of a new syllable. The accent in the video is a British English accent but I do try to pronounce the 3-4 American English sounds with an American accent :) IPA RESOURCES: Private English lessons & speaking practice: http://goo.gl/T7bKHx Here is the link to the PDF reference file with all the IPA symbols and example words: IPA reference file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8v1Z0nKnKCaYW9Tbkc1Tjg2VHc/edit?usp=sharing Free online dictionary with IPA as seen in the video: http://www.dictionary.cambridge.org Here are the playlists of my English lessons: Grammar lessons: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6BDo90oiwpS4_AM1c0s0ozpROeE2A9ff Listening exercises: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6BDo90oiwpRdmnAzmYwdc0Az0ZOG2XNA Vocabulary videos: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6BDo90oiwpTlYAYSitjwWn29BEdCBi9j Andrew, Crown Academy of English http://www.crownacademyenglish.com http://www.youtube.com/user/CrownAcademyEnglish https://twitter.com/Crown_English Photo credits: "All The Best Guys!" Learn 10 times more vocabulary by using Word Webs!

19:46
By using this system, you will learn 10–15 times more vocabulary every time you look up the meaning of a word! You'll also remember more of what you study, because you'll be making mental connections and learning in an interesting way. The secret is using 'word webs'. This powerful learning tool will change the way you learn vocabulary and idioms. In this video, I'll explain what a word web is, how to use it to learn English, and finally I'll do an example word web with you. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/learn-10-times-more-vocabulary-by-using-word-webs/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. James from engVid. I would like to help you with your vocabulary. I'm sure that you've looked at engVid and seen many lessons on vocabulary, from drinking, vacationing, weddings, all sorts of things. But when you finish the video, how much do you remember? And how much do you really understand? I'm going to teach you today something I call the... A word web to help you not just remember the words, but truly understand them, and expand or go bigger than that. I did a lesson earlier on, on mind maps where I kind of introduced the idea of mind map, but I didn't really... I don't think I got into it as much that would actually show you how to use it so that you can get better with it. So, I'm going to fix that today. All right? So what we're looking at is called a word web. And if you notice, poor Mr. E is caught up in the web. Nooooo! And I'm going to do the same with you. I'm going to get you... Because this is a spider, and the spider lives in a web, it catches things and those things can never escape. I want to do that with your memory and your vocabulary, teach you in a way that you're going to catch the words and you won't forget. Okay? So I'm going to explain the method here. So we're going to be clear on the method, then we're going to take a word and use it, and show you how it works. Ready? Let's go to the board. All right, so, word web. This is a specific form of mind map which means it's one type. There are many types. Okay? And what they... What they do is they're based on the idea that your brain works a certain way with pictures and colours. So, why don't we use these to help you? And I'm going to do that now. What you will need, you will need a ax... You will need an English to English dictionary. If you really need to get, you know, your language to English, that's fine if you really need it, but English to English dictionary will be preferable because we want to get the definition of the word from an English source, not a translated source. Okay? So maybe we should start with your translating dictionary, and then after take the English word and get an English to English. The translating dictionary will help you understand the ideas, and then the English to English. And sometimes you might notice they don't exactly say the same thing. That'll be interesting for you. Next, you're going to need access to the internet or an idioms dictionary. The idioms dictionary will be for later on, and they have them and you can even go online and look for idioms. But the joke of it is I said access to the internet. Well, my friend, if you're not on the internet, you're not watching this video, so I'm assuming you've got access to the internet. Okay. The next four steps will be this: We're going to take a word... So, we're going to take one word, whatever the word is, we're going to write out the definition from the dictionary. What the dictionary says, not what you think, not an interpretation or somebody giving you sort of their idea of it. From that, we're going to follow... Okay? We're going to write out the words you think of when you see this word. This is called association. I think: "Cat", I say: "Dog". You say: "Milk", I say: "Cow". I associate. This is the words that come to me. I want you to do that because that is part of a natural human process. You think of something, you think of something else. You think of: "Mother", you think: "Love". You think: "Money", "McDonald's"? Probably not. But you get the idea. Okay? So we're going to start with the dictionary definition, then we're going to work with how your brain works. I want to have your mind incorporated or use your way of thinking in this. So you're going to put down your words. So if it was: "Cow", you might put: "Milk, cheese, and steak". Mmm, steak. Then we're going to go out... Back to our dictionary, we're going to look for synonyms. If you open any dictionary usually it will say: "This is the word", and then it will have after it: "Here's a synonym for this word. Here's another one." Synonyms, you know, words that are similar. For instance, height and tall. How tall is the building? What is the building's height? They're not exactly the same, but they can be used in a similar or same fashion sometimes. Okay?

History of Russia Part 1

08:39
Russia Part 1 traces the origins of modern Russia and Ukraine among Slavic tribes, Viking raiders, and the medieval kingdom of Kievan Rus. Mongol hordes brought death and destruction, but under the first Tsars, a strong Russian state slowly emerged. A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia, Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный', which means 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he called Ivan 'the Terrible' in this video? Because he was evil or useless? No, it is because 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English many years ago as 'Terrible', when the word commonly meant awesome or formidable (see definitions 3 & 4 here: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/terrible?s=t). And in English, Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since. Please help support Epic History TV at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/EpicHistoryTV... This works under a similar principle however the binaural beats ensure you are not woken up and that it is only the learning part of your brain that is listening to the video. Your brain has an optimal frequency for learning, (when you are totally focussed and absorb information easily), your brain also has a perfect frequency for remembering newly processed information and finally there is a frequency of the brain that allows your subconscious to absorb information whilst you sleep. Learn English with Harry Potter, and see how studying a new language can be magical! TRANSCRIPT Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this important lesson on: "The Secret to Mastering English!" And the secret is... -"Where am I? And who are you?" -"You're in Hogwarts, Alex. And I'm Dumbledore." -"No you're not. Dumbledore looks different." -"I shaved. Listen, Alex. I have an important job for you. Can you do it?" -"Anything for you, Dumbledore. What is it?" -"Your engVid students want you to do a lesson on Harry Potter. Here, take this and teach them." -"Thank you." -"You're a wizard, Alex. Now, go." We're back. So, today we are going to talk about Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, chapter one. Now, I know for many of you, Harry Potter was the first book you read in English. And the reason it's a really, really good book for you guys to read is that it is the most popular book series ever, which means that you can find it in many languages, there have been movies made about it, and you can find a lot of discussion about the characters, the dialogue, the story. So everyone knows pretty much what happens in a lot of these stories. Now, if you don't have a copy of the book, what you can do is get a print version or an e-book version on Amazon attached to this video. What I recommend, though, if you want a more interactive experience with Harry Potter is that you get the free audio book. Now, you can get a free audio book of Harry Potter, not just this one, the entire series, by signing up for the free trial at www.audible.com, which is attached to this video. When you click on the link, you will have to go through a couple of different pages and signups, but at the end you do get the book for free. So go through it, sign up, get the book for free, and it's an excellent audio book. Highly recommend it. Now, why should we read Harry Potter? Well, it has interesting characters; Harry, Ron, Hermione, the Dursleys, Dumbledore who I met today. How cool was that? It has great dialogue, great plot, and the language is pretty easy to follow, but of course, it still has a ton of useful vocabulary. Not just for non-native English speakers, but even for, you know, kids who are already native speakers of English. And finally, it's just magical. It's a magical story, a magical book. I love it. It's one of my all-time favourites, so let's start looking at chapter one. So what I'm going to do is look at the actual text from chapter one. Not every line, of course, but I'm going to pick some very specific lines that tell us important details about the story or that tell us some important vocabulary that I think is going to be useful for English students. Now, you notice I gave a page number to start this. I am going to be looking at this hard cover version of the book. This was published by Raincoast Books in Vancouver, so this was published in Canada. Maybe your version is this one, maybe it's not. Maybe you're listening to the audio version, in which case page numbers are not important. But if you want to follow with a physical copy, this is the version that I am using. Okay? Let me put this down. Here we go. Page seven. So we start Harry Potter by learning about the Dursleys, Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, and their son, Dudley. First we have this line: "Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm named Grunnings, which made drills." So, a firm is a company, and Mr. Dursley was the director of this company, and they made drills. Now, drills are a power tool. Think of the tool that allows you to put screws into things, like: "[Drilling noise]". That's a drill. Okay? So he was a director of a firm named Grunnings, which made drills. Now, we have a description of him: "He was a big beefy man", "beefy", think of beef. So he was a little bit fat, and: "...with hardly any neck". Now, "hardly any" means almost zero. So, he was so big and round that you couldn't see his neck. Okay? Hardly any neck. "...although he did have a very large moustache".
