My favourite ESL class game
Rules- Before class prepare a key of what weapons will go in each grid space. Divide the class into teams, each person has 3 lives. Draw a 10x10 grid on the board. Ask students the revision questions, whoever gets the question right can choose a square. Tell the student what the square contains. Gun= take one life point away. Two guns = Take two life points from the same person or one each of 2 people. Bomb= The answer-er loses one life point. Fire= The whole team loses one life point. Heart= Add one life point. The team that still has people alive in the end wins. Change the names of the values if you wish. If enough people press 'like' I will add more games.

For Teachers: Using Genki English (or GenkiJapan.net) Computer Games in a Computer Lab
More at http://genkienglish.net/teaching/computers or http://GenkiJapan.net Ok this one is more for teachers, It's how to use the Genki English ( http://genkienglish.net/teaching/computers ) or Genki Japan ( http://GenkiJapan.net ) games in a computer lab. The basic idea is that the students all start the computer games at the exact same time and race to see who can finish the game first. It makes a fantastic lesson. But .... it's really, really important to get the class disciplined because as they click "start" the whole place goes crazy! These are the techniques I use and they work really well in getting the students learning all together thanks to the power of games! You can also use it for http://GenkiFrench.com http://GenkiSpanish.com http://GenkiThai.com http://GenkiKorean.com http://GenkiPhonics.com or http://howdoilearnchinese.com/ Hope students don't mind me putting this up here, I just wanted more teachers to see how to use them in class! (And the more "Likes" I get, the more teachers are likely to see it and use it in class!) Be genki, Richard

A Video Game That Teaches You How To Code
"Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think,” Steve Jobs said in 1995. But for a beginner, learning to code can be intimidating. Enter CodeSpells. UC San Diego's Sarah Guthals has developed this video game to teach people how to code. The story line is simple: you’re a wizard that uses spells (i.e. code) to navigate through the world, fight off foes, and solve problems. While experienced coders can delve deep into the programming to create some truly devastating spells, newbies can easily experiment with the simple drag-and-drop coding interface. The Prepositions Class Game -- How To teach Prepositions
An exciting game using simple, everyday objects to help students practice using prepositions of location in English. How to play: Make sure students have adequate knowledge of the items used (0:21) as well as the prepositions used (1:21). Place a table and a chair at the front of the classroom and leave plenty of space for movement around them. Select one student from each team (A and B). Have the student from team A stand near the table and the student from team B stand near the chair. Put the objects listed at the start of the video in front of the students on the floor so they can reach them easily. Have the two students listen to the voice recording (e.g. “The ball is on the chair. The ball is under the table.”) and let them compete to see who can be the first to put the object in the correct place according to the instructions. The team whose instruction is read first will have the advantage, but this changes every round. Award one point for correctly placing the object according to the instructions and one bonus point to the faster of the two students to place the object correctly. If only one student places the object correctly, give him or her 2 points. No points are awarded for incorrect placements. Continue until all the students in the class have had a turn and/or all 13 rounds have been completed.
Using Games in the Classroom
Every game has potential for learning! Consider the educational value in some of the more popular, entertainment-focused games that your students (and you!) already enjoy at home. Of course, not all games are school-appropriate, but you can approach any game from an educational perspective. Think of games as experiences rather than instruction -- as field trips, not textbooks. It's a perspective that's as valuable for students as it is for teachers. Learn English by playing Final Fantasy 7! Let's play and learn!
Looking for a FUN way to learn English? Have you tried video games? That's right! In this lesson, I'll teach you English from the popular game Final Fantasy VII. Because of how interactive it is, you can really learn a lot of English from the game, especially vocabulary, expressions, and slang. I'll go over the first half hour of the game with you, and explain the English that the characters use. Teaching Social Thinking Skills using Computer Games
Current educational policy in many nations encourage emphases within the school curriculum, particularly important in the second millennium: enhancing thinking as an integral part of the school curriculum, and integrating technology. Future learners should not only acquire a predefined constant knowledge, but higher order thinking abilities, enabling them to intelligently analyze and deal with different situations, solve problems and make decisions. In an age where learning resources are changing, incorporating technology into the curriculum has been found to positively affect the development of higher order thinking skills. Thereof we should examine using technology for teaching (ordering and practicing) thinking to be used in the learners' everyday lives. In the current college course program, teachers learned how to use computer games to enhance social thinking skills. Participants were required to develop simple computer games, including analyzing situations (e.g., what skills involve social activities like choosing a friend), and building an algorithm of problem solving to be practiced in a computer game, in which children had to solve social issues. Participants reported fostering thinking skills: thinking about alternatives, considering consequences, comparing and analyzing steps. The program has increased the awareness of teachers to the significant potential of computers for teaching thinking, which can be applied to the learners' everyday lives. The serious side of playing games - learning world
http://www.euronews.com/ Serious games might sound like a contradiction in terms, but in fact, video and computer games are increasingly being adapted for the classroom. The idea is to make learning more interactive and engaging. The phrase "serious games" originally refered to things like cards and board games but now it increasingly means computer games with an educational slant. But can gaming really be educational? Can it really compete with commercial games for young people's attention? We asked some experts. *Playing seriously* In the US, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, one of the world's most prestigious and advanced universities when it comes to technology, the day starts with a roll of the dice or a hand of cards. The Game Lab is where professors and students are developing new serious games. Zachary Sherin, an undergraduate student, explained: "Certain types of education, the old ones using text books are being shoved aside by new, interactive media. Games have an incredible potential to gather people's interest in topics that they might not otherwise enjoy." Zach helped develop "A Slower Speed of Light", a videogame which explains the theory of relativity by enabling gamers to experience it. He tole euronews: "It's very hard to intuitively understand how the world would change by travelling at the speed of light. The game does a good job of letting us see what it might look like." The term Serious Games was first coined in the US by author Clark C. Abt in 1970, but with the advent of IT the possibilities are constantly evolving. Steven Scirra, a graduate student explained: "Lots of people think: 'Oh look, there are millions and millions of people out there who love video games! If we can capture that audience by developing a game with serious content, then we can help people learn!' I think this is backwards. You need to know why you are using a game for this topics." Postdoctoral researcher Konstantin Mitgutsch, expanded on that: "And that is really tricky because you understand that you have to organise the knowledge in a new way. You cannot just put it onto a game, or just do it the other way around: you have a pretty much fun game and you just add a little bit of knowledge in there." Konstantin and Steven are working on a game called Movers and Shakers, which is designed to teach gamers about business ethics. They agree that the challenge is making serious games as attractive as commercial ones. Kostantin said: "We cannot excuse badly designed serious games anymore. Every boring serious game destroys all the potential of serious games. Because when students, kids and whoever plays that game decide that they don't like educational games anymore, in that moment, we have lost the battle." There is a need for professional artwork and real content according to Sarah Verilli, Game Lab's Development Director: "We are still learning how people learn from games, because it's not the same way you learn when you are sitting through a lecture or when you read a book. I don't think we are going to see education becoming nothing but playing digital games, but I don't think you can do education with just one method." For more information see "http://gamelab.mit.edu":gamelab.mit.edu *Not just for fun* Many countries have not only started using computer games in the classroom, but are also encouraging students to build their own games, even at a very young age. In Scotland, 'The Consolarium' is a state-funded centre that aims to encourage educational gaming and game-designing. We visited one school to find out more. Scotland has its own educational system which is separate - and in many ways different - to the education system in the rest of the UK. 'The Consolarium' is one example. It was set up in 2006 to develop educational games. At one primary school near Edinburgh, six year-olds are learning all kinds of skills while playing games in the classroom. Game Over? Teaching Failure via Computer Games (Learning World S4E46, 1/3)
A strategy adapted from video games might be able to change students' fear of failure at school. Like in video games, students are encouraged to retry once they have failed. Instead of feeling embarrassed when committing an error, teachers invite them to try once again. In this way, students understand that failure is part in the process of learning.
