How To Teach Verbs To Kids -- The Love Like Don't Like Game

01:38
How to play: After making sure students understand the difference between the verbs love, like and don’t like you can play the game. Divide the class in half to make two teams. Send ONE student from each team out of the class (somewhere where they can’t eavesdrop) and close the door. From 00:15 use the video to find three activities e.g. swim, read, dance. Pause the video once all three actions have been read out. See how well the student’s teammates know him or her by asking them to guess whether their teammate loves, likes or doesn’t like each of the activities: Supposing there are 10 students on each team in the classroom, have them vote by raising their hands for the statement that they most agree with. “S/he loves swimming” (5 hands up = 5 votes) “S/he likes swimming” (3 hands up = 3 votes) “S/he doesn’t like swimming”(2 hands up = 2 votes) The greatest number of students on the team (5/10) guessed that s/he loves swimming. Take a note of this somewhere and then do the same with the other two verbs (read, dance). Now repeat this with the other team. See how well they know their teammate. Have the students come back into the classroom and ask them to answer the questions honestly and with no influence from their teammates (don’t award points if their teammates try to cheat or call out the answer). If the student’s answer is the same as the option that his or her teammates chose (i.e. I love swimming), award 10 points. If the student’s answer is different (i.e. I like swimming or I don’t like swimming), no points are awarded. Award a total of 40 points if the teammates manage to guess three out of three correct answers.

We just know it happened in the past some time between the day that you were born until now. Visual Representation of Example: – Example: I’ve been to Australia. – This means some time in the past, you went to Australia. – been vs. gone: Gone means you went there, but you’re still not back yet. Been means you went there, and then you left. – We often use never to emphasize negatives and ever to emphasize questions. – Example: Have you ever been to America? (No, I’ve never been to America.) Recent Past Events: – Example 1: Mum, have you finished cooking dinner? – Example 2: Yes boys, I’ve made your favourite! – We can also use just, yet and already for emphasis. – Example 1: Mum, have you finished cooking dinner yet? – Example 2: Yes boys, I’ve just made your favourite! Timeline: Unfinished States – We’ve known each other for two weeks now. – The boy met the girl at a certain point in the past, and they still know each other in the present. – They have known each other for two weeks, which means they met two weeks ago. Simple Past: Function – To talk about finished events where the time is known. – Example 1: How was your date honey? – Example 2: We broke up… – In these examples, although the time is not mentioned, both the boy and his mother know the time of the date. – We can use just for emphasis that an event recently happened. – Example: We just broke up. Form: Statements: Subject + have/has (+ never/just/already) + past participle + … (+ for/since, time word, yet) I + ‘ve + been + to Australia. I + ‘ve + never + been + to America. I + haven’t + made + dinner + yet. We + ‘ve + known + each other + for two weeks now. Open Questions: Wh-/How + have/has + subject + past participle + … (+ for) + ? How long + have + we + known + each other + for? *Wh-/how question words and for are for open questions. Yes/No Questions: Have/has + subject (+ ever) + past participle + … (+ yet, time word) + ? Have + you + ever + been + to Australia? Have + you + finished + cooking + dinner + yet? *Ever, yet and time words are for yes/no questions. Summary

For the “No Music” version of this ESL video, please click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n6tFsK8ZKY Title of English / ESL Video: The Story of Alice and Josh Target English Grammar: Past Simple Tense – Regular Verbs (Also known as the Simple Past). Student Proficiency Level: Beginner / starter level grammar Suggested Courses: General English Instructions: – Play the video in class after delivering a warm-up activity first. – Pause the video whenever the narrator asks students a question to give students time to answer. For example, after elicitations and concept checking questions (CCQs). Summary of English Grammar: Past Simple Tense – Regular Verbs Approximate chronological order: Story: – Starts: 0:24 – Ends: 1:48 Rules and Explanation: – Starts: 1:49 – Ends: 4:36 Grammar Explanation – How do we change regular verbs into the simple past? Elicitation: *Pause the video after the question to give students time to answer. Josh asked Alice to dinner. What is the base verb of asked? (ask) For most regular verbs we add +ed at the end of the base verb to change it into the simple past. – Alice liked shopping. What is the base verb of liked? (like) For verbs ending with an -e we add +d. – Josh married someone else. For verbs ending with a consonant and +y we remove the -y and add +ied. – They stayed at a romantic hotel. For verbs ending with a vowel and +y we don’t remove the y. We just add +ed. – Alice and Josh travelled to Italy. For verbs ending with consonant, vowel and consonant we double the last consonant and add +ed. In American English travelled is spelled with one l. So American English doesn’t always follow his rule. These verbs are what we call regular verbs. They follow a rule to change into the simple past.

Irregular Verbs in English – Group 3

11:36
Irregular verbs can be difficult to learn, but I'll teach you the easy way to remember them! Irregular verbs are very common parts of the English language, so it's important that you learn how to use them correctly. I'll teach you the base form, simple past, and past participle. To make things even easier, read, download, and print our list of irregular verbs in the EngVid Resources section at: http://www.engvid.com/english-resource/common-irregular-verbs-grouped/ Memorizing irregular verbs can be hard to do by yourself, so watch this video so you can finally understand and remember group 3 of the irregular verbs. If you haven't already seen it, check out my video on irregular verbs groups 1 & 2 at: http://www.engvid.com/irregular-verbs-in-english-groups-1-2/ Test your understanding of this lesson with my quiz, at http://www.engvid.com/irregular-verbs-in-english-group-3/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Ronnie. Do you have a problem? I do. [Laughs] I got loads of problems, but maybe a problem that you have, I can help you with. So, one of the most difficult things about learning English is how to conjugate the verbs. In English, we have millions... Not millions. We have a lot of verbs-42-and we need to know, you need to know the present tense, the simple past tense, and something that's called the past participle. So, the simple present tense we use for things that we do every day. For example: I eat breakfast, I go to the bathroom; I am a human. The simple past we use for things that we talk about in the past: I ate breakfast, I went to the bathroom. Yes. I was a human. The most difficult one, and the one that frustrates everyone so much is the past participle. Now, instead of me saying past participle all the time, I'm going to tell you p.p. Woo. It's kind of like having to go to the bathroom; p.p. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to teach you the past simple and the past participles. But the problem is there are so many of them, and they have very different structures or styles. If your life was easy, we would just have one or two different ways to conjugate the verbs, but no. Learning English is going to be difficult for you, but not when I'm here. I can help you out with this. So, if you are frustrated or you just don't know how you are going to learn the past participle of irregular verbs: Sit back, relax, and do some mind mapping. If your verb is a regular verb, so it ends in "ed", you have no worries because it's going to be simple past, it's going to be "ed", and the past participle is going to be "ed". So we're not doing that. These are all going to be irregular verbs. So, what I've done is I've tried very diligently to put these into groups for you to help you remember them when it comes time for a test. So if you're learning grammar, if you're learning passive voice, or if you have to do present perfect or past perfect, you have to know the past participles of the verbs. So, what I've done is I've tried to split the verbs, the irregular verbs into three different groupings, because there are so many of them. So, this video is the most difficult-bear with-and also, the last one in our group. So, if you go to the resources section on www.engvid.com, we have all of these groups in a list for you to make your learning easier. What we're going to go over today is group three. You probably have seen the videos I've done on group one and two. This is the follow-up for group three; brace yourself, the most difficult. So, let's dive right in. The first group has one verb change. Sorry, one vowel change. So, if you guys look at all of these words, we've got an "i" running through them. So, we have: "begin", "drink", "sing", and "swim". When we change this group to the past tense, the only thing that we have to change here is we're changing the vowel "i" to an "a". So, "begin" becomes "began". And then when we make the p.p.-I have to go pee-pee, never ends-we're going to make it a "u". So, it's going to be: "begin", "began", and "begun". All of this... All of these verbs in this group follow the exact same pattern. The present tense has an "i", the past tense has an "a", and the past participle has a "u". You. So, let's look at the next example: "drink", "drank", "drunk". "i", "a", "u". "Drink, drank, drunk", it's also a song. The next one we have is-la, la, la, la-"sing". So, if you follow my pattern, what vowel would I put here? "a". Oh, good answer, it is an "a". So we're going to say: "sing", "sang", "sung". Now, "sang", "sung" is very similar to Samsung, so you can remember the electronics' company Samsung. Please give money, Samsung, for mentioning you. In this... It'll help you remember it. "Sing", "sang", "sung", "sing", "Samsung". Good. But be careful. It's not "Samsung", it's "sang", "sung". Don't mess that up. Remember the rule: "i", "a", "u".

5 ways to use the PRESENT CONTINUOUS verb tense in English

06:54
If you think the present continuous is only used to talk about actions that are happening in the present, think again. In this grammar lesson, I look at five different ways the present continuous (also called present progressive) can be used, including a pre-arranged future plan, an event that is happening during a particular period, repeated behaviors, and temporary situations. This is a great way to refresh what you already know about the present continuous and to expand on it. After watching, I am hoping you will check your understanding by completing the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/5-ways-to-use-the-present-continuous-verb-tense-in-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on five ways to use the present continuous, or present progressive, depending on which grammar book you read. So, today, we are going to look at five different ways that we use this very, very common grammar tense. Now, if you're watching this video, you might say: "Okay, I know the present continuous. I use it to talk about an action that is happening right now." Or maybe you're a little more advanced, and you say: "Okay, you can use it for an action happening now, and I know I can use it for future actions, too." This is correct. These are two ways that we're going to talk about today, but there will also be three more ways. So just to begin, as a reminder, this is the structure of the present continuous. You have a subject, the verb "to be", and a verb+ing. For example: I (subject) am (verb "to be") studying (verb+ing). "I am studying" is a present continuous sentence. Now, let's look at the five ways that we can use this tense. Number one, the most basic one: An action that is happening at this moment. -"What are you doing?" -"I'm watching YouTube videos." Okay? "I am studying.", "I am reading.", "I am listening to music." Now, in this moment. And, again, the most common question in this situation is: -"Hey. What are you doing?" -"I am doing this." Number two: An action that is happening during this period of time. Now, this means the period of time in your life right now, maybe the past week, two weeks, a few months. For example: "Hey. Are you still practicing piano?" You're not practicing piano at this moment, but practicing piano is something you do or have been doing in your life for a while. So, for example, you can say, you know: "Hey. What are you doing? Where do you go to school?" blah, blah, blah, and a person can say: "Oh, I'm studying at the University of", wherever. Okay? So if a person asks you: -"Where do you study?" -"I am studying at this university" or "this school". You are not studying there right now in the moment, but in your life this is happening right now. Number three: An action that is prearranged in the future. So this means you are almost 100% certain that this action or this event will happen, is going to happen. So, for example: -"What are you doing tomorrow?" -"Tomorrow? We're going to New York tomorrow. We are going 100%." Other examples: "My mom is visiting me this weekend.", "I'm seeing a movie tomorrow.", "I'm watching a play with my cousin." Okay? So anything where it's scheduled, it's prearranged, it's preplanned, you're almost 100% sure it's going to happen in the future. You can also use the present continuous in this way. One thing about number three is depending on, you know, who your grammar teacher is, you might hear sometimes: "You only use the present continuous if it's an action that is happening in the near future." This is incorrect. Okay? You can use the present continuous to talk about actions that are definitely in the near future, like: "We're going to New York tomorrow", but you can also talk about something that's going to happen in the distant future, too, using the present continuous, like, for example: "We are going to Cuba in November." Okay? "We are travelling to Australia next year." So here are examples of present continuous for prearranged things in the future, but they can be far away. Not just near future; far future, too. Number four: A temporary event or state/situation. So a person can be acting a certain way in the moment, and maybe they don't normally act this way; it's a temporary way of acting. For example: "Why are you being so selfish?" You are acting a certain way, you are being selfish in the moment and it's temporary, and maybe normally you are not selfish. Another example is... For example, if you are in a band, and you say: "Oh, normally Jack plays guitar, but today he's playing the bass." Now, again, normally he plays the guitar. Today, temporarily, he is playing the bass.
